Entrust the check to qualified personnel
Checking fire doors calls for a competent person from a specialised firm holding the qualification set out in UNI 11473: the door is certified as an assembly, and a seal replaced with a non-equivalent spare voids its declared performance. The person responsible for the property verifies the qualification when awarding or renewing the contract and keeps evidence of it together with the service reports.

Never wedge fire doors open by improvised means
A fire door held open with a wedge, a chain, a fire extinguisher propped against it or its closer unhooked compartments nothing: it is the commonest and cheapest way to cancel a fire-safety investment. Where the flow of people or goods needs the door open, the answer is an electromagnetic hold-open device linked to the detection system, not an improvisation. The person responsible writes this into the procedures and checks it during surveillance.

Keep door closing under visual surveillance
Between one six-monthly check and the next a door fails in ways anyone can see: it does not close fully, the rebate is blocked by a mat or a carton, the panic bar jams, a seal comes away. Surveillance is a walk-round that the person in charge assigns to a designated worker and that needs no technician. The interval is not fixed by a standard: the person in charge sets it from risk and use, and a month is the starting value proposed here.

Have the fire doors checked every six months
The periodic check must be carried out twice a year, by the end of the month it falls due, and verifies operation and full closing, the seal at the rebate, the condition of the intumescent strips, self-closing devices and coordinators, panic hardware and hinges. The duty lies with the employer or the person responsible for the property; the work is for a competent person from a specialised firm, not for the building's general handyman.

Update tag and report at every service visit
Traceability of the check rests on two documents: the maintenance tag fixed to the individual door, carrying the date and reference of the job, and the service report issued by the technician, describing the checks made, the faults found and the parts replaced. The technician fills them in, the person responsible for the property keeps them. The sources consulted describe these two documents and do not confirm a central register dedicated to this particular duty: anyone keeping a fire-safety register logs the visit there as well.

Keep the documentation of every installed door
The declaration of performance, the marking, the installation instructions and the maintenance manual are what let the technician know which spare parts are allowed and let an inspector know what performance the door claims. The person responsible collects them at handover and keeps them available for the whole life of the door, together with a list of the doors with position and fire-resistance class. It is an internal task, but without it the six-monthly check is blind.
