Italian kit for employers, operators and building managers with portable fire extinguishers in a company, a residential building or premises open to the public. It covers visual surveillance, the six-monthly periodic check, the scheduled overhaul and the cylinder pressure test with intervals that differ by extinguishing agent, the recording of each job and end-of-life disposal. The overhaul and test intervals are the ones applied on the catalogue product pages: check them against the maintenance tag of the individual extinguisher.

Pressure-test water-based extinguisher cylinders
On water and foam extinguishers the cylinder test is brought forward compared with the other types: the catalogue applies 72 months, an interval adopted as a precaution because contact with water speeds up corrosion. This interval too has not been read on the paid UNI standard. The duty to have the test done remains with the employer or the operator; the test itself is for an authorised workshop, which issues the certificate and re-stamps the extinguisher.

Overhaul powder and CO2 extinguishers
The overhaul opens the extinguisher, examines the cylinder from inside and replaces the extinguishing agent and the seals. For powder and carbon-dioxide extinguishers the catalogue applies a 60-month interval, the same one already published on the product pages. The figure has NOT been read on UNI 9994-1:2024, which is a paid standard: that is why this control is marked as advisory and must be checked against the tag and the manufacturer's instructions. A workshop or an authorised competent person does the work.

Log every job in the fire-safety register
Surveillance, periodic check, overhaul and pressure test must all be entered in the fire-safety control register, with date, outcome and the signature of whoever did the work: the register is the first document an inspector asks for, and an extinguisher in good order but unrecorded counts as unchecked. Keeping it is the employer's or operator's duty, even when maintenance is contracted out. The tag on the extinguisher does not replace the register: it goes alongside it.

Dispose of extinguishers as special waste
The event that triggers this control is withdrawal: an extinguisher that fails its test, has expired or has been replaced becomes special waste and cannot end up in a skip, in scrap metal or in a corner of the yard. Collection must be entrusted to a company entered in the National Register of Environmental Operators and accompanied by the waste identification form, whose returned copy proves the waste reached its destination. Classification under the correct EWC code depends on the extinguishing agent and is agreed with the operator.

Overhaul halogenated-agent extinguishers
Halogenated or clean-agent extinguishers follow a longer overhaul interval, 72 months in the value the catalogue applies. The same caveat as the other overhaul line holds: the figure has not been read on the paid standard and should be confirmed against the maintenance tag and the manufacturer's manual before being treated as final. The duty to have the overhaul done lies with the employer; the work is for a competent person or an authorised workshop.

Have the periodic check carried out every six months
The periodic check verifies pressure, state of charge, integrity of the cylinder and hose, accessibility and signage, and updates the maintenance tag. The interval is six months at most, and in any case by the end of the month it falls due: it is the tightest deadline in this kit and the first thing an inspection looks at. The duty lies with the employer or the operator of the activity; the work is for a competent maintenance technician, not for in-house staff.

Keep the extinguishers under visual surveillance
Surveillance is the look-and-see check: extinguisher in its assigned place, reachable and signposted, tag legible, seals intact and pressure gauge in the green band. The standard sets no interval: it asks for a surveillance plan that the person in charge of the activity draws up from the fire risk, and monthly is the widespread practice — the value proposed here, to be adapted to your own plan. Suitably informed in-house staff can do it; no maintenance technician is needed.

Pressure-test the extinguisher cylinders
The pressure test proves the cylinder under pressure and replaces the safety devices: it is the operation that decides whether an extinguisher can stay in service or must be withdrawn. The catalogue applies 120 months for powder, CO2 and halogenated agents. The dossier confirms how the test is run but not the intervals, which the paid standard did not make legible: the figure must be checked against the tag. An authorised workshop does it, never the company's own staff.

Overhaul water and foam extinguishers
Water-based extinguishers — water and foam — have the shortest overhaul interval because water attacks the cylinder from inside. The catalogue applies 24 months where the lining is not declared, a short interval adopted as a precaution, and 60 months where the cylinder is declared plastic-lined: the tag or the manual tells you which case is yours. Here too the figures have not been read on the standard. A workshop or an authorised competent person does the work.
