Fire doors, shutters and dampers — periodic checks (France)
A list of checks and obligations with their cadence, ready to add to your agenda.
For French operators of premises open to the public and for employers whose buildings rely on fire compartmentation. It gathers the annual check of fire dampers and safety-actuated devices, the servicing of self-closing fire doors, the check of automatic doors and gates in workplaces, the entry in the safety register and the rules for keeping the devices effective. Where the legal research could not read the source text, the rule says so and publishes no frequency. It helps you meet the duties; it does not replace the advice of the installer.

Have the self-closing fire doors serviced
Self-closing fire doors must be kept effective: intact intumescent seals, a correctly set door closer, working electromagnetic hold-open and safety-actuated device. The yearly frequency shown here comes from standards NF S 61-933 and NF S 61-937 and from manufacturers' guides, technical documents the research did not read in full: it is therefore settled practice, not a frequency fixed by law. The general maintenance duty stays with the ERP operator or the employer; the work is done by an approved technician or the installer.

Record the checks in the safety register
Every check on fire doors, shutters and dampers must be entered in the site safety register, with the date, the outcome and the faults found. It is the same register that gathers the other periodic checks: it is the document a safety commission reads to reconstruct the history of the installation. The duty falls on the ERP operator, who also records work carried out by third parties.

Re-test the devices after works on the compartmentation
Running a cable, adding a duct or moving a partition can breach a fire wall or stop a damper from closing. This line asks you to re-test the affected devices after any building or services work, without waiting for the next periodic check, and to keep the result. It is an organisational practice proposed by the kit: it is for whoever commissions the works, who must ask the contractor or the maintenance provider for it.

Do not wedge fire doors open and report damage
A fire door wedged with a chock, a crate or an extinguisher does not close, and the compartment no longer exists: holding it open is allowed only with a hold-open device provided for in the design, which releases the door on alarm. This line is a reminder for staff: check periodically that no door is wedged, that nothing obstructs its travel and that damage is reported. It is an operating recommendation, not a statutory frequency, and it concerns everyone who uses the premises.

Check automatic doors and gates periodically
Automatic and semi-automatic doors and gates in workplaces must be checked and serviced periodically, at a frequency matched to their use. The frequency usually quoted by trade sources could not be verified against the text of the arrêté of 21 December 1993, because Légifrance was unreachable during the research: the rule therefore carries no figure and asks you to read the article before setting your own schedule. The duty falls on the employer; the check is for a qualified in-house technician or a contractor under a written agreement.

Have the fire dampers checked every year
Fire dampers fitted in ducts must be checked at least once a year: closing action, thermal or electromagnetic release, condition of the blade and of the frame. The confirmed references are the arrêté of 22 March 2004 as amended and standards NF S 61-937-1, NF S 61-937-5 and NF EN 15650; the tag "IT 246" and the six-monthly frequency for classified sites, often quoted, were not confirmed and do not appear here — on an ICPE site the prefectoral order governs. The duty falls on the building operator or the employer; the work is for a qualified technician or the installer.
