Check wall hydrants every month
Once a month the operator, or someone they appoint, checks that every hydrant can be reached without moving anything, that the cabinet opens, that the sign is visible and that there is no obvious damage to reel, hose, nozzle or valve. No qualification is needed: this is a walk-round that comes on top of the specialist company annual inspection. What is found must be noted, because a hydrant blocked by a pallet is the most frequent defect.

Train and maintain 5% fire safety helpers
The employer must have enough trained fire safety helpers: a share of 5% of employees is generally sufficient, accounting for holidays, sickness and shifts, and the training covers theory plus a practical extinguisher exercise. The evidence is the list of appointees with their certificates, reviewed once a year. Applies to every company with employees; where the fire risk is high the share must be increased on the basis of the risk assessment, and very small companies still need at least one trained person per shift.

Verify the 15-second requirement on escape routes
In Germany escape routes must reach full emergency illumination within fifteen seconds of a mains failure: the German technical rule is stricter than the European standard alone, which accepts fifty per cent in five seconds and one hundred per cent in sixty. This is a design requirement, not maintenance: it is verified at design stage, when the central unit or a group of luminaires is replaced and whenever the escape route changes, by a qualified electrician.

Function-test the hold-open devices every month
The monthly test belongs to the operator or an appointee and needs no special qualification: trigger the detector or the release button and check that the door closes on its own and fully. After twelve consecutive tests with no defects the interval may move to three months, and a single defect brings it back to monthly. Each test is logged with date and result in the hold-open system log.

Have smoke and heat exhaust systems serviced annually
The operator has a specialist company carry out at least one annual service of the smoke and heat exhaust system, with opening tests and checks of the emergency power supply and actuators, plus unscheduled checks after a fire, storm or modification. The evidence is the service report entered in the system logbook. Applies to buildings with smoke and heat exhaust systems required by the building permit or the special building regulations (protected staircases, halls, car parks); the inspection by an approved inspector comes on top of maintenance and is normally three-yearly under the state inspection ordinance. Have the fire alarm system serviced annually by a certified company
The annual service, carried out by a DIN 14675 certified company, covers visual inspection of the whole system, activation of all detectors, verification of correct indication at the fire brigade panel, function tests of alarms and control outputs, and a check of the safety power supply. The evidence is the company's service report. Applies to buildings equipped with a fire alarm system; standby batteries must be replaced after 4 years at the latest, a limit to be confirmed against the system manual. Have hold-open systems checked by a qualified technician
Once a year the hold-open system must be inspected by a certified specialist whose certificate of competence is valid for five years: detectors, power supply, holding magnet, control electronics and behaviour on mains failure. This is a different check from the monthly test and does not replace it. The operator carries the duty and files the report with the door documentation.

Have fire doors inspected every 12 months
Fire and smoke doors and gates must be inspected at most every twelve months by a competent person with specific training on powered gates, appointed by the employer or the building operator. Full unaided closing, intumescent seals, hinges, lock and self-closing device are checked. Where the manufacturer test book asks for a shorter interval, that one prevails. The dedicated de-brandschutztueren kit adds hold-open systems and the usage discipline.

Have wall hydrants inspected annually
The annual inspection, carried out by a specialist company, covers general condition, ease of operation, static and flow pressure measurement and checks of the hose reel and hose; the hose pressure test is repeated every 5 years. The evidence is the inspection report with the measured pressure values. Applies to buildings with wall hydrants required by the building permit or the fire safety concept; the pressure test needs the cooperation of the water utility where the network is public. Cadence to be confirmed on the cited source.

Refresh fire safety helper training every 3 to 5 years
It is recommended to repeat the fire safety helper instruction with a practical extinguishing exercise every 3 to 5 years: this is a recommendation, not a statutory deadline, and the qualification has no formal expiry. The evidence is the refresher certificate with the date of the extinguisher exercise; 36 months is the cautious end of the range. Applies to every appointed fire safety helper; where the fire risk is high the interval must be shortened.

Run an evacuation drill
Evacuation procedures must be practised at appropriate intervals, recording date, duration, issues found and corrective actions. The evidence is the drill report. Applies where an escape and rescue plan exists; for schools, hospitals, hotels and public assembly venues the state building codes and special building regulations often set precise, frequently annual, intervals. Cadence to be confirmed on the cited source.

Run the monthly emergency lighting function test
Once a month the operator simulates a mains failure to verify that all safety and emergency luminaires switch on, entering result and date in the system logbook. A daily visual check of the supply and a weekly battery test are also expected and must be run as an internal routine. Applies to buildings with emergency lighting required by ASR A3.4/7 or by the building permit; systems with automatic testing run the test themselves, but the result must still be checked and recorded. Have fire extinguishers inspected at least every 2 years
The duty lies with the employer or the operator of the workplace; the inspection is carried out by a competent person under DIN 14406-4, normally the manufacturer service or a specialist company, and cannot be self-certified. Two years is the maximum interval: a damaged or discharged appliance must be inspected at once. The evidence is the dated inspection label on the appliance together with the company record. The dedicated de-feuerloescher kit adds the internal examination, the pressure test and the disposal rules.

Instruct employees on fire behaviour every year
Employees must be instructed before starting work and at least once a year on escape routes, alarm, behaviour in case of fire and the use of extinguishers, with content taken from the fire safety regulations. The evidence is the signed instruction record. Applies to all employees, including agency workers and contractor staff permanently working on site.

Run the annual emergency lighting duration test
Once a year the operator tests the system for its full rated duration, normally 1 or 3 hours, started manually and outside operating hours so the building is never left without reserve. Result and date go into the logbook. Applies to the same buildings as the monthly test. Cadence to be confirmed on the cited source.

Have the fire safety regulations reviewed every 2 years
The employer keeps the DIN 14096 fire safety regulations (parts A, B and C) current and has them reviewed by a competent person at least every two years, documenting the review in writing. The evidence is the updated document with a dated, signed review note. Normally applies to buildings open to the public, production sites and wherever the building permit or the risk assessment requires it; part C concerns only staff with specific fire safety duties. Inspect the fire alarm system quarterly
Every quarter the indications, alarm transmission, power supply and faults of the fire alarm system must be checked; the inspection may also be carried out by instructed staff of the operator. The evidence is the entry in the fire alarm system logbook. Applies to buildings with a fire alarm system required by the building permit, the special building regulations or the insurer; the inspection by an approved inspector is normally three-yearly but depends on the state inspection ordinance.
