Renew the driving licence (Italy)
Undergo the medical fitness check with an authorised doctor, the local health authority, ACI or a driving school; for category B the validity is 10 years up to age 50. Proof is the new licence sent by post together with the provisional certificate issued by the doctor. Applies to holders of an Italian licence: validity drops to 5 years between 50 and 70, to 3 years between 70 and 80 and to 2 years beyond 80, while professional categories C, D and CQC renew more often.

Check the expiry date of the health card carrying the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) on the back and request a new one if it does not arrive automatically. Proof is the new card with the tax code and the updated validity date. Applies to people covered by the national health service in Italy and to EHIC holders in the other EU and EEA countries and in Switzerland: in Italy the card is normally sent automatically to the registered address before expiry.

Renew the ISEE means-test statement (Italy)
File the single substitute declaration (DSU) with INPS, a tax assistance centre or an accountant to obtain the new ISEE statement, valid until 31 December of the year it is filed; it is needed for benefits, school fees, the single allowance and rebates. Proof is the ISEE statement downloaded from the INPS portal. Applies to households claiming means-tested benefits: the ISEE expires on 31 December each year regardless of the month it was filed, so renewing it in January avoids a break in the single allowance. Renew the sports medical certificate (Italy)
Undergo the sports fitness examination, competitive or non-competitive, with a sports physician or your family doctor and obtain the certificate, valid one year from the date of issue. Proof is the certificate handed to the sports club. Applies to members of sports federations, sports promotion bodies and associated disciplines for competitive activity and to people taking part in non-competitive sport organised by CONI-affiliated clubs or by schools, while it is not required for individual recreational exercise. Renew the electronic identity card (Italy)
Book the renewal with your municipality, or via Agenda CIE, in the 180 days before expiry. For adults the CIE is valid for 9 years plus the days between the application date and the holder's date of birth, so it expires on the first birthday after the ninth year, an effective duration of between 9 and 10 years; proof is the new card delivered by post. Applies to Italian citizens and resident foreign nationals: for minors aged 3 to 18 the card is valid 5 years from issue and below the age of 3 it is valid 3 years.

Renew the national identity card (France)
CNIs issued since August 2021 are valid for 10 years for adults; renewal can be requested in the year before expiry and is free if the old card is handed in. Proof is the new CNI. Applies to French card holders: cards issued between 2014 and 2021 have a 15-year validity through automatic extension, while for minors the validity is 10 years.

Renew the Personalausweis (Germany)
Apply for the new card at the Bürgeramt before expiry: validity is 10 years for holders aged 24 or over and 6 years for younger holders, and extension of validity is not allowed. Proof is the new Personalausweis. Applies to residents of Germany, where holding a valid identity document is compulsory (Ausweispflicht).

Renew the Führerschein (Germany)
Licence documents issued from 19 January 2013 are valid for 15 years: at expiry a new card is requested from the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde, with no new medical exam for class B and similar. Proof is the new credit-card format Führerschein. Applies to documents issued from 19 January 2013; older paper, pink or grey licences have exchange deadlines set by year of birth and year of issue in Anlage 8e FeV.

The UK photocard driving licence must be renewed every 10 years with DVLA and a reminder is posted before expiry. Proof is the new photocard together with the DVLA online record. Applies to holders of a UK licence: from the age of 70 renewal follows a different procedure and a shorter cycle, every 3 years.

Renew the DNI (Spain)
Book an appointment at a DNI issuing office and renew the document before it expires; for holders aged 30 to 70 the validity is 10 years. Proof is the new electronic DNI. Applies to holders of the Spanish DNI: between 5 and 30 years of age the card is valid 5 years, below 5 years of age 2 years, and permanent cards held by the over-70s must still be replaced by 3 August 2031 under Reglamento (UE) 2019/1157. The cartão de cidadão for holders over 25 is valid for 10 years; since May 2021 renewal on approaching expiry is automatic for holders over 25, but it must still be checked and collected.
